Sunny Boy Vs. Monkey Boy

Matthew Hayden's pain medication is keeping him sane so Icky Ponting is taking up the slack. As most of you know by now, Sunny has spoken out against the tyranny of the Aussies calling for a massive uprising all around the world to put an end to their oppressive and cruel ways (sorry, we got a little carried away). Let's try this again: Sunil Gavaskar recently said that though Australia is a great team, they are not liked nor loved because they are such boors. He contrasted them with the Windies of the 70's and the 80's who, he said, were very well liked even as they were kicking everyone's arse.

Well, monkey boy got all hot and bothered about it. He said: "you suck"; "we good"; "we not perfect"; "you not perfect"; "me hungry"; "Australian for beer"; "need bananas, now!".

He also said: "We all know the way he (Gavaskar) played his cricket, don't we?" That's interesting because we actually do know how Sunny played his cricket: With a very straight bat and a lot of class.

Another thing that struck us was his comment about how badly India was doing in recent times. To beat you on the head with a very obvious observation: India doing badly and the Australian cricket team being boors has nothing to do with each other. So, where did that come from?

Sunny, right or wrong, has always been very consistent about his views on sledging. He is on record saying that : "Banter is alright, it makes the game interesting and fun but abuse is not". Not many people know this but we will let you in on a secret: banter is not Ponting's strong suit. He is not smart enough to banter.

We could dissect each of Icky's statements but will instead offer up the floor to others. Since Sanjay felt strongly enough to leave us a comment on an completely unrelated post about this issue, we will let him be the contributing editor of this post:
(ed. talking about Gavaskar's attempted walk-off incident at the MCG in 1980-81) Perhaps Monkey Boy is not, but I am old enough to remember that series. In those days of "not-impartial" umpiring, Australia played with 13 people on the field, including the umpires of course. Sunny Gavaskar got bum decisions practically every other match by an umpire called Whitehead. In the first match, both innings he was given out caught behind twice controversially. Monkey boy is not old enough to remember that Gavaskar was a guy who throughout his career walked when he was out. It was a rare occasion when he awaited an umpire's decision (for LBW typically). That series was also terrible for sledging.
Oh...and by the way, we kicked Oz's ass at MCG in 1980-81. Got them out under 90 runs, if I correctly recall.
Monkey boy should leave the likes of Gavaskar alone. They were people with class. He isn't.
We await with bated breath for the next Ponting's press conference.

Regarding Ponting's reply to Gavaskar's comments over Australia's behaviour :

In my view, it was about the truth pinching hard . Nearly all teams have had problems with Australia's on field verbal tactics.

The South Africans complained of racial abuse when they went there, and in fact pleaded their home crowd to boo the Aussies when they came for return series.

NewZealander Lou Vincent went public with his feelings against Australia by saying they hunt like a pack of dogs and they think they are above the game.

India's Sachin Tendulkar has been the target of Aussies verbal volleys so often, and in the recent malaysia tri-series, ponting made some rude remarks at him after he was called back by the umpire after being initially given out.

Sri Lanka's Muralitharan and Ranatunga have had problems with Aussies.

Brian Lara too. After he reached 400, Ponting instead of congratulating him, went on to say that Lara was a selfish player in going for the record.

No doubt "Arrogant Aussies" is the right tag for your team, Mr. Ponting.

Be a good ambassador for the sports first before trying to become the best batsman.

And as for his remarks that there are not too many popular winners, you only have to look at the popular Windies of the 80s, Sachin tendulkar, Roger Federer, etc. to see the hollowness of his remarks.

So many teams you have roughed up, are now coming out in the open. Who all will you reply to Mr. Ponting ?

Add to that, Ponting and Damien Martyn's recent behaviour against Mr. Sharad Pawar in the award-giving ceremony in the Champions Trophy in India.

Remember Chris Gayle Vs. Michael Clarke in the Champions Trophy where Gayle was fined but Clrake escaped. Gayle later said that the perpetrator of the crime should be equally punished.

The administrators of the game are turning a blind eye to Aussies on field behaviour.

I agree. On the other hand, if you talk to an Australian, they will point out that even though Ponting has been trouble he never threatened to walk-off the field.

They will also point out that the other teams are not saints. Especially the Sri Lankans (Ranatunga).

Thanks for the comment. Linked your blog.

Sunil Gavaskar's recent comments regarding David Hookes were extreme to the point of being absurd.

To link a man's violent death, which was completely unrelated to cricket, and the behaviour of the Australian Cricket team defies logic and belief.

Many aussies, (such as myself) will concede that our team does on occasion come across as being arrogant, but humility for publicity's sake isn't humility at all.

In any cricket team, there are 12 different people, with 12 different personalities, and once someone has proven to me that the other international team has a clean sheet when it comes to on-field behaviour, I will gladly retract my comments.

Did someone say Herschelle Gibbs? Arjuna Ranatunga? Hansie Cronje? Salim Malik?

After all, if you hold the Aussies up to a high standard of conduct, you must apply it to everyone. People in glass houses and all that.

Sunil Gavaskar is a greatly respected former cricketer, but his comments has found him lacking, at least in this instance, as a statesman of the game of cricket.

As a final word, the Australians may be aggressive and dominant, but they take as good as they give, and you won't hear them complain about another team's aggressive tactics on the field.
